General information about Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thames in London, named after the nearby Tower of London. It was opened in 1894 and connects the borough of Tower Hamlets on the north side with the borough of Southwark in the London Borough of Southwark on the south side. The bridge is 244 metres long and the two towers are 65 metres high. The roadway between the towers is nine metres above the River Thames and is used by around 40,000 vehicles a day.
The towers are open daily from 9.30am to 6pm (last entry at 5pm). Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket office on the day of visit. Adults £12.30, children (5-15 years) £6.20, disabled adults £9.20, disabled children (5-15 years) £4.60, companion (one per disabled visitor) free.
History
Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894 and is a combination suspension and bascule bridge. It was designed to accommodate the growing traffic on the Thames without obstructing shipping. The bridge was designed by the City Architect of the time, Sir Horace Jones, and built by Sir John Wolfe Barry. It took eight years to build and required the labour of more than 400 workers.
Architecture and design
The bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture, with two impressive towers connected by two horizontal walkways, offering breathtaking views across London. The bridge is decorated with blue and white ceramic tiles by Royal Doulton. The bridge can be opened in the middle to allow large ships to pass. This was particularly important during the Industrial Revolution when the Thames was a major transport route.
