South America

South America is a continent of contrasts, offering everything from the snow-capped peaks of the Andes to the endless beaches of Brazil, mysterious ancient ruins and vibrant cities.

Geography, climate and places of South America

The fourth largest continent, it stretches from the Caribbean in the north to the icy landscapes of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego in the south. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. South America combines a wealth of natural and cultural areas, ranging from the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin to the arid Atacama Desert and fertile plateaus and savannahs.

The climate is as varied as the landscapes. The Amazon region is characterised by tropical heat and high humidity, while the Andes offer cooler temperatures. The Atacama Desert in Chile is considered one of the driest places on Earth, while southern Patagonia has a harsh, windy climate. The best time to travel varies greatly depending on the region. The Andes are best visited during the dry season from May to September, while countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Chile attract visitors with summer activities or skiing holidays in the mountains.

South America’s cultural diversity is deeply rooted in indigenous traditions and shaped by colonial heritage, African influences, and a modern zest for life. Fascinating sites such as Machu Picchu in Peru, the Moai statues on Easter Island, and the colonial cities of Colombia and Ecuador bear witness to history and spirituality. At the same time, modern life pulsates in metropolises such as Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Bogotá and Santiago de Chile, which impress with their creativity, dance and urban flair.

Cultural diversity, travelling and culinary delights

Life in South America is characterised by warmth and a strong sense of community. Music and dance play a significant role, with samba and bossa nova being emblematic of Brazil, tango of Argentina, and salsa of Colombia. These forms of expression embody culture and joie de vivre. While life in Andean villages is often traditional, life in the megacities is fast-paced and modern. Visitors are welcomed everywhere, whether they are staying on a finca in the countryside or in a trendy metropolis.

Transport in South America is also diverse. Buses form the backbone of the transport system, providing reliable connections even to remote locations. Countries such as Argentina and Brazil have well-developed domestic flight networks, making it possible to cover long distances. The Andes offer adventure, with old trains and boats navigating the Amazon’s rivers. Within cities, visitors can enjoy the flexibility of taxis, underground trains or tuk-tuks in smaller towns.

In terms of cuisine, South America is a real feast for connoisseurs. Argentina and Uruguay are famous for their asado (grilled meat), while Peru delights visitors with ceviche, quinoa and innovative fusion cuisine. Brazil tempts visitors with feijoada, fresh fruit and exotic juices, while Colombia is renowned for its arepas and world-famous coffee. Mate tea is an integral part of everyday culture in Argentina and Paraguay, and pisco is a popular drink in Peru and Chile, inviting visitors to join in.
