On 4 March 2025, we flew to Asia with a one-way ticket, no return and no fixed plan. We had already given up our homes and jobs to make room for something new: our “world trip” The Roam.
Throwbacks
Week 18
Flowerdale, Australia
Our first full week in Australia: family time, day trips, and everyday life on the farm. We cooked, played games and helped with projects. In Melbourne CBD we found one of our favourite foods again, and in Ringwood we went for a stroll. A highlight: a family day in Marysville – with bookshops, meat pie, a waterfall and sculptures.
Week 17
Taipei, Taiwan · Hong Kong · Flowerdale, Australia
From Taipei, we travelled on to Hong Kong, which was exciting, big and diverse, but not always particularly charming. The big highlight came on Friday when we arrived in Australia, our second home! We saw our family again in Flowerdale, Victoria, and got straight down to work building fences on the alpaca farm. We love farm life!
Week 16
Hiriketiya & Ahangama, Sri Lanka · Taipei, Taiwan
This week, we travelled along the south coast of Sri Lanka, staying first in Hiriketiya and then in Ahangama. We also explored Weligama and Mirissa – all of them had a relaxed vibe, beautiful beaches and LOTS OF good cafés. At the end of the week, we travelled on to Taipei and we were pleasantly surprised: the city is lively, modern and really cool!
Week 15
Kandy, Ella & Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka
Our first week in Sri Lanka and we are amazed! Kandy, Ella and now Hiriketiya are all simply amazing. Safari in Yala National Park, sunset on Pidurangala Rock and the famous Nine Arch Bridge – highlights! Unfortunately we had a setback while hiking: torn ligaments and a fall, but the mood remains good!
Week 14
Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia · Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei · Singapore · Colombo, Sri Lanka
This week, we said goodbye to Malaysia. We took a short detour to Brunei, where we visited some impressive mosques. Then we moved on to Singapore, which was a short but great stop with a particular highlight: Gardens by the Bay. At the end of the week, we flew to Sri Lanka, arriving in Colombo, ready for whatever comes next!
Week 13
Sandakan & Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
We had lots of highlights this week! In Sandakan, we saw orangutans and then watched proboscis monkeys. At the English Tea House we experienced a touch of Bridgerton feeling. Next, we moved on to Kota Kinabalu, where we went diving for two intense days and obtained our diving licence!! It was absolutely surreal and unforgettable!
Week 12
Krabi, Thailand · Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
We start the week in Krabi before travelling on to Kuala Lumpur, a really cool city! We visit the Petronas Towers, the Batu Caves and lose ourselves in the huge shopping malls. On Sunday we fly on to Sandakan and enjoy a short break in our Airbnb. The next week will be damn exciting!
Week 11
Chiang Mai & Krabi, Thailand
I’m slowly starting to feel better, so we’re exploring Chiang Mai at a leisurely pace. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly our visit to the elephant sanctuary, where we simply observed the animals without riding, feeding or touching them. Next, we head to Krabi to enjoy the sea air and take a boat trip to Railay Beach, a marvellous place!
Week 10
Khao Yai, Kanchanaburi & Chiang Mai, Thailand
We started the week in Khao Yai National Park. I was feeling a bit better and we could really enjoy the nature. Then on to Kanchanaburi: a bit of history, a bit of nature in Erawan National Park with lots of humidity! The trip was great, but Friday it was over – arrival in Chiang Mai and a break, I was still sick.
Week 9
Bangkok & Ayutthaya, Thailand
We spent most of the week in Bangkok. It was very humid and Carlo had a cold. Our road trip started on Sunday: first to Ayutthaya (temple ruins), then on to Khao Yai National Park. I had been feeling sick all day, then in the evening I had a fever of over 39 degrees – break! I hope we’ll go to the national park tomorrow!
Week 8
Siem Reap & Phnom Penh, Cambodia
We started the week in Siem Reap, exploring the amazing temple complexes around Angkor Wat. As well as lots of culture, we also visited the Cambodian circus Phare! We then travelled on to Phnom Penh, where we learned about Cambodia’s recent and very moving history.
Week 7
Phu Quoc, Vietnam · Luang Prabang, Laos
We start the week still on Phu Quoc – lots of sunshine and unfortunately a severe sunburn despite shade and SPF 50+. Ouch. Then we travelled on to Laos to explore Luang Prabang. The city immediately won us over with its tranquillity and spirituality, the friendly people and the beautiful nature!
Week 6
Hoi An & Phu Quoc, Vietnam
We spent most of the week in Hoi An – walking, eating, working, drinking coffee. Friday was the highlight: the Lantern Festival! An absolute bucket list moment. On Saturday we headed to Phu Quoc. The island is lively, crazy but somehow charming. Carlo took the longest cable car and had fun at the water park.
Week 5
Hanoi, Ha Long Bay & Hoi An, Vietnam
Our last day in Hanoi and we say goodbye to new friends we have met in this exciting city. A highlight of the week was definitely the trip to Ha Long Bay – the natural wonder with the relaxing cruise was simply breathtaking. We then travelled on to Hoi An, where we are now enjoying a bit more peace and quiet.
Week 4
Osaka, Japan · Beijing, China · Hanoi, Vietnam
We make a short stop in Beijing, just for a few days – but we have to see the Great Wall of China. It’s surreal to stand on one of the seven wonders of the world. Then it’s straight on to Vietnam: Hanoi is loud, hectic, full of scooters – but the people are friendly and the food is delicious!
Week 3
Osaka & Kyoto, Japan
We take the Shinkansen to Kyoto, where things are noticeably quieter. We enjoy nature, visit countless temples and take things a little slower. The next detour to Osaka and a day trip to Nara provide some really good impressions – especially of deer running free.
Week 2
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is another world. Between ancient temples, vibrant quarters and silent shrines we collect our first Goshuin stamps. This city is loud and quiet at the same time; an exciting mix of culture, modernity and constant wonder.
Week 1
Seoul, South Korea
Our trip starts in Seoul. The first few days are a mixture of arriving, admiring and eating street food. We visit impressive palaces, stroll through colourful night markets and curiously immerse ourselves in the world of Korean skincare – somehow we find ourselves in the middle of it all.
Where are we at the moment?
Why The Roam?
Our journey has no fixed plan, no destination, no deadline. We travel to discover the world in our own way: open-minded, curious, free. The Roam stands for aimless travelling, drifting, discovering without limits. No to-do lists, no expectations – just us, new places, encounters and what happens along the way.
It’s not about ticking off as many countries as possible. It’s about roaming – moving, immersing, letting go.
This journey is a path that only reveals itself as you go.
