History
The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos was founded in 1496 by King Manuel I. It became a monument of national importance and is one of the highlights of Portuguese architecture, along with the Batalha Monastery and the Church of Christ in Tomar. Until 1834, the monastery was home to the Hieronymites, the order of St Jerome, which gave the monastery its name.
Architecture and design
The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is an incredible symbol of Portugal’s wealth and success during the Golden Age of Discovery. Designed by the architect Diogo de Boitaca, it is one of the finest examples of Portuguese late Gothic Manueline style with Renaissance influences.
The imposing south portal, designed by João de Castilho, rises above the cornice of the monastery church. It is 32 metres high and 12 metres wide.
The entire façade of the monastery is made of white limestone. It was extracted from a nearby quarry and transported to Belém on horse-drawn carts. The walls and ceilings are richly decorated and bear witness to the Manueline architecture of King Manuel I.

The monastery is a popular tourist destination and attracts visitors all year round. As opening times vary according to the season, it is advisable to check in advance. The entrance fee includes access to the church, the convent museum and the surrounding gardens.
