A weekend in Casablanca

Casablanca is a city that successfully balances its turbulent history with modern life. It is the beating heart of Morocco, where tradition and progress meet.

Climate and location

Casablanca is located on the Atlantic coast in the north-west of Morocco and enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm but tempered by sea breezes, while winters are mild and humid. This makes the city a popular tourist destination throughout the year.

History

Casablanca’s history goes far back into the past. Originally inhabited by Berbers, the city was later influenced by Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. In the 20th century, the city flourished under French colonial rule. This is still reflected today in the architecture, which is a mixture of traditional Moroccan and European influences.

During our trip we came across two very special restaurants that impressed us with their unique flavours and exceptional experiences: La Sqala and Blend Gourmet Burger.

1. Hassan II Mosque

The Hassan II Mosque is undoubtedly the heart of Casablanca. It is considered one of the most impressive religious buildings in the world. Completed in 1993, the mosque is impressive in its imposing size and astonishing design. Its minaret rises 210 metres into the sky, offering visitors a spectacular view of the city and the ocean. As well as being a place of worship, the mosque is a symbol of Moroccan culture and architecture.

2. La Corniche & Ain Diab beach

Casablanca’s seafront, known as La Corniche, is a place where locals and visitors meet to enjoy Casablanca’s seafront, known as La Corniche, is where locals and visitors meet to enjoy the sea. There are numerous restaurants, cafés and lounges serving fresh seafood and delicious Moroccan specialities. The promenade is ideal for walking, cycling or simply enjoying the sea views. At night, the Corniche comes alive with music, dancing and entertainment.

Ain Diab beach is a popular spot for relaxation and water sports. The golden sandy beach stretches along the coast and offers the perfect setting for sunbathing or swimming in the clear waters of the Atlantic. Numerous beach clubs and bars along the promenade invite you to end the day on the beach and admire the sunset.

3. Casablanca Medina

The Medina of Casablanca offers a fascinating contrast to the modern environment. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with traditional craft shops, souks and historic buildings. Here you can immerse yourself in the authentic Moroccan way of life as you stroll through the souks in search of handmade souvenirs. The Medina is a place where Casablanca’s traditions and cultural heritage come alive.

4. Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

Rising majestically above the city, the Sacred Heart Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, is an outstanding example of 20th century Gothic architecture. Its imposing façade boasts ornate decorations, filigree rose windows and a striking tower that reaches boldly into the sky.

5. Mohammed V Square

In the heart of Casablanca, Morocco’s vibrant metropolis, lies the impressive Place Mohammed V. This square is not only a hub of urban traffic, but also a place of historical significance and modern flair. Named after King Mohammed V, it offers a rich mix of history, architecture and urban life.

6. Habous Quarter

The Habous quarter in Casablanca is a timeless oasis that preserves the essence of Moroccan culture and architecture. Also known as “Neomedina”, it was built in the 1930s and still retains the charm of bygone days. It is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

The architecture of the Habous quarter is reminiscent of a medina, but with the orderly structure typical of the French colonial period. Narrow alleys and high arcades give the quarter a fairytale feel, while handcrafted woodwork and intricate mosaics represent traditional Moroccan craftsmanship. Don’t forget to visit the Bennis Habous pastry shop when you visit the Habous quarter.
