Dynjandi – Highlight of the Westfjords

The highlight of the Westfjords: The Dynjandi.

This beautiful and at the same time spectacular waterfall is the absolute highlight in the west of Iceland. However, the whole scenario is only completed by many smaller waterfalls that are located below the Dynjandi. A fascinating spectacle!

Facts

The Dynjandi is often called Fjallfoss and is located in the Westfjords. Its name which in Icelandic means as much as “the raving one” or also “the booming one” does it all honour. From Reykjavík there are about 370 kilometres of partly winding roads. One leaves the ring road and follows route 60, the Vestfjarðavegur, until one discovers the impressive waterfall of the river Dynjandisá behind a turn in the road. It is 100 meters high, 30 meters wide at the top and 60 meters wide at the bottom. It is important to know that you can NOT camp on the spot. The former campsite is closed, there are toilets on site, but camping is forbidden.

Scenery

The Dynjandi is the biggest of all; the other waterfalls are located below to it and have pretty much unspeakable names:  Bæjarfoss, Hundafoss, Hrísvaðsfoss, Göngumannafoss, Strompgljúfrafoss, Hæstahjallafoss. Each of them is special in its own way and contributes to the spectacular atmosphere. You should definitely hike up to the top to see the natural highlight. The ascent takes about 20 minutes with several stops to take pictures. Arriving at the top it will be a wet affair. Already from a distance, the Dynjandi appears powerful and majestic; from the near, the wall of water appears much more energetic and fascinating.

Not to forget the view. Turning your back to the Dynjandi, you have an almost unreal landscape in front of your eyes. The interplay between the soundscape and the views is fantastic.
