In our logbook we share our experiences and impressions of an unforgettable journey full of cultural highlights, culinary delights and magical moments along the Vltava River. Find out more about the top spots here!

Day 1: Off to the Golden City – Prague Kick-off

The day started with an early start as we left by car for the Czech Republic just before 7am. The journey was pleasant and we reached the border at 11.30am. At 1.30pm we arrived at our charming hotel in Prague, which immediately welcomed us with its cosy atmosphere.

After a short rest at the hotel, we took the tram to the city centre. Our first stop took us directly to the banks of the Vltava River, where we were greeted by the picturesque cityscape. Our next destinations were the famous Astronomical Clock and the Old Town Square. The Astronomical Clock, a masterpiece of medieval engineering, fascinated us with its hourly spectacle of moving figures. Strolling through the winding alleys, we were enchanted by the charm of the old town.

For dinner we went to ‘The Street’ restaurant where we enjoyed delicious burgers. We ended the day on the banks of the Vltava River, where we took the opportunity to take some photos. A creamy ice cream rounded off our first day in Prague perfectly.

To be honest, I really underestimated Prague. When you think of European cities, you often think of Rome, Paris, London or other cities. Prague wasn’t really on my radar, but I was so wrong. Prague blew me away after just half a day. The view of the other side of the Vltava is so aesthetically pleasing!

Day 2: Culture and indulgence – from Kafka to chimney cakes

After a hearty breakfast at the Bistro Monk, our second day began. Our first stop was the Astronomical Clock, followed by the City Library, where we saw the fascinating Book Sculpture. This unique installation of hundreds of books seemed to reflect endlessly in a mirror, creating a surreal sight. We continued on to the surreal head of Franz Kafka and the impressive Dancing House, whose unconventional architecture caused a stir.

In the Jewish Quarter we explored the Jubilee Synagogue and immersed ourselves in the rich history of this part of the city. The Jubilee Synagogue, also known as the Jerusalem Synagogue, impressed us with its magnificent Art Nouveau architecture and ornate mosaic windows. A highlight of the day was enjoying a traditional chimney cake, a local speciality.

In the late afternoon we crossed Charles Bridge, one of Prague’s most famous landmarks. The bridge was full of life – street musicians and artists created a great atmosphere! We finished the evening with corned dogs in the Old Town Square.

A full day of sightseeing today, but a lot of fun! Prague has so much to offer and the architecture is really great! There’s something to see on every corner!

Day 3: On the trail of history - from castle battlements to street food dreams

The third day started early again and we made our way to Prague Castle. The climb up to the St Vitus Cathedral was strenuous – lots of stairs and narrow corridors – but the breathtaking view over Prague made it all worthwhile. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, St Vitus’s Cathedral impressed us with its imposing pointed arches and colourful stained glass windows. We then explored the Dripstone Wall, another architectural highlight. Our visit to Manifesto Anděl, a lively food market, was a must. Here we sampled a wide variety of delicacies: from poke bowls to juicy burgers and delicious tacos – a real feast for the taste buds!

After a short lunch break at the hotel, we changed and headed back to the city centre around 5pm. As always, our first stop was the Astronomical Clock on Old Town Square! We browsed the souvenir shops and enjoyed an Italian dinner at Pizza Bertoldi. We ended the evening with a Guinness and a cocktail at The Irish Times Bar, followed by a delicious trdelník to end the day on a sweet note.

Manifesto Anděl is probably not an ‘insider tip’, but it is highly recommended! The atmosphere is super relaxed and there are so many places to eat!

Day 4: Farewell and journey home – one last look at the Czech Republic

Our last day started with a delicious breakfast at Osada, right next to our hotel. After packing, we made our way back home to Düsseldorf, with a few interesting stops along the way.

Our first stop was Velká Amerika, a quarry often referred to as the ‘Czech Grand Canyon’. This former limestone quarry with its turquoise blue lake provided a breathtaking backdrop. The tour continued to the imposing Karlstein Castle, which towers majestically over the town of the same name. After a short walk around the castle, we continued our journey.

Although we initially toyed with the idea of making a detour to Saxon Switzerland, we decided against it due to the warm weather and the weekend. We finally reached home at around 8pm.

Prague was great! We can well imagine the city is really enchanting in winter with its Christmas markets! We’ve got to do it again sometime!

This trip to Prague was a perfect mix of cultural discovery, culinary delights and unforgettable moments. From the majestic sights to the hidden gems of the city, Prague left us in its spell!
