Breathtaking cliffs and the last sausage before America
The cliffs of Sagres are undoubtedly one of the region’s main attractions. The rugged cliffs rise imposingly out of the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views of the endless sea. The cliffs at Cabo de São Vicente, the most south-westerly point on the European mainland, are particularly impressive. Spectacular sunsets that turn the sea golden are an unforgettable experience. As well as offering spectacular views, the cliffs are home to a large number of seabirds, making them an important ecosystem.
Cabo de São Vicente is also home to a famous bratwurst stand, known as the ‘Letzte Bratwurst vor America’. This unique stand is run by a German couple, Wolfgang and Petra. They still import the sausages from Germany and offer visitors a meal with a gigantic view of the Atlantic. The stand even has its own ‘Cape Certificate’ as a souvenir.
Beaches and nature
There are numerous beaches along the coast, ideal for surfing. Praia do Beliche is one of the most popular beaches in the region and a must for any visitor. With its golden sand and perfect waves, it is a paradise for surfers.
In addition to the beaches, Sagres offers numerous hiking trails along the coast and through the nearby Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Nature Park. This park is famous for its rich flora and fauna and offers the opportunity to discover some of the region’s unique species.
Fortaleza de Sagres
The town is closely linked to Portugal’s maritime history and was an important starting point for many voyages of discovery during the Age of Discovery. A visit to the Fort of Sagres, perched high above the sea, is an excellent way to learn more about this fascinating history.
The Fortaleza de Sagres is an important Portuguese fortress located on the 1,000 metre long and 300 metre wide Ponta de Sagres headland. It is surrounded by high cliffs, washed by the sea and perfectly protected by a high wall facing the land. Despite these fortifications, only a tower and the remains of a wall remain today. The fortress was destroyed in a pirate attack in 1587 and the rest fell victim to the earthquake of 1755. In 1928 a stone circle was discovered on the site of the fortress, the meaning of which is still unclear. Today it is a national monument of great importance to the Portuguese.
Within the walls is the small church of Ingreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça. It was built in the 16th century on the foundations of the church of Henry the Navigator, the Church of Santa Maria. A festival is held here every year on 15 August. Today the fortress is open to the public and the entrance fee is less than 5 euros. There is a 3km path along the cliffs around the headland. The view from here is magnificent. There is also a small exhibition, a souvenir shop and a cafeteria.
