Logbook: From the Alps to Northern Italy

Our journey through the picturesque landscapes of the Alps and surrounding areas as well as the charming towns and cities has provided us with many unforgettable moments. From the bustling streets of Munich to the tranquil shores of Lake Como and the breathtaking peaks of the Alps, we took advantage of every day to explore the natural beauty, culture and history of this region.

Day 1: Munich – a taste of Bavaria

Our journey through the Dolomites and Northern Italy started in Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Our first stop was the impressive Fraunkirche church, whose Gothic architecture immersed us in the history of Bavaria. After this initial cultural experience, we explored the vibrant streets of Munich, venturing into charming cafes and discovering small boutiques. Finally, we were drawn to the Japanese Garden, a place of tranquillity and harmony amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. The combination of traditional Bavarian culture and Far Eastern serenity made this day a successful start to our trip.

This trip will be different from what we are used to. We drift, see what we like and book hotel after hotel. We are excited to see where it will take us!

Day 2: Bolzano and Merano – where the Alps meet the Dolomites

The next morning took us to Bolzano and Merano, two cities whose history and architecture mark the transition from the Alps to the Dolomites. In Bolzano, we strolled through the picturesque streets, marvelled at the magnificent buildings and sampled the local delicacies. We were captivated by the charm of Merano, nestled in a breathtaking mountain landscape. We spent the day strolling the promenades and soaking up the lively atmosphere of these towns.

Day 3: Dolomites – an adventure in the mountains

This day was dedicated to an unforgettable adventure in the Dolomites. The Three Peaks hike took us into a world of rugged peaks and green valleys. Along the way, we met adorable cows that added to the idyllic mountain scenery. As the drone took off, spectacular views of the majestic mountain peaks opened up. On the way back we came across the mysterious Rittner Pyramids and in our hotel we discovered a spooky painting hiding a safe. A day full of nature, adventure and a touch of mystery.

We especially loved the Dolomites! Lots of nature, beautiful trails and a photographer’s paradise!

Day 4: Lago di Braies, Lago di Dobbiaco, Alpe di Siusi – lakes and sunsets

One of the highlights of our trip was undoubtedly a visit to Lago di Braies. One of the highlights of our trip was undoubtedly a visit to Lago di Braies. Surrounded by rugged mountains, the turquoise lake was reflected in the silence of nature. Lago di Dobbiaco, nestled in a picturesque mountain landscape, also had an enchanting tranquillity. The highlight of the day, however, was a visit to the Alpe di Siusi at sunset. We walked across the blooming meadows in complete solitude, letting the drone soar into the sky and capturing the golden hour in breathtaking images. The experience was an unforgettable highlight of our trip.

Day 5: Lago Carezza and Malcesine – a sense of romance

Lago Carezza in the morning, with its turquoise waters and surrounding mountains, was truly beautiful. The journey continued in the direction of Lake Garda, Malcesine. There we strolled through the charming streets and met Carlos’ parents. The day ended with a delicious Italian dinner – pizza and pasta! But not without a surprise: a scorpion had adventurously found its way into our room. This unexpected event added a touch of adventure to our late evening.

Day 6: Lago di Garda – between Limone and Verona

The next morning, the picturesque town of Limone Sul Garda on Lago di Garda opened its doors to a world of indulgence. Exploring the town took us to several ice cream parlours where we sampled the most delicious Italian ice creams. Thanks to our car, we had the freedom to explore not only the towns on the shores of Lago di Garda, but also Verona with ease. The day ended, once again, with Italian pizza. Day 7-8: Milan – Fashion, culture and history

Our trip took us to the vibrant metropolis of Milan. Exploring the city was a fascinating mix of history and modern flair. With each step we took, we delved deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating city. The evening visit to the Duomo di Milano was a breathtaking experience. The Gothic architecture in the spotlight gave the cathedral a fairytale atmosphere. The surrounding squares and alleyways were bustling in the evening and we were immersed in the vibrant life of the city.

Day 9: Como – Elegance on Lago di Como

Lago di Como, one of the most beautiful lakes in Northern Italy, welcomed us with its tranquil elegance. Arriving in Como, we explored the charming town with its narrow streets and picturesque squares. The lakeside promenade offered breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We ended the evening in a cosy restaurant overlooking the lake, the lights of the city reflected in the water.

Day 10: Como and Bellagio – postcard idyll on Lago di Como

Another day at Lago di Como promised unforgettable impressions. We let ourselves be enchanted by the charm of Como, visiting historical sights and enjoying the culinary delights of the region. The trip to Bellagio, a picturesque town at the confluence of the three arms of the lake, fascinated us with its colourful houses and narrow streets. Here we experienced the true picture-postcard idyll that makes Lago di Como so special.

Day 11: Furka Pass, Rhone Glacier, Rhine Gorge – Welcome to Switzerland

On to Switzerland! The trip took us through breathtaking Alpine scenery. The Furka Pass offered not only spectacular roads but also breathtaking views of colourful peaks. A visit to the Rhone Glacier with its mighty masses of ice left a deep impression on us. The Rhine Gorge, also known as the “Swiss Grand Canyon”, took us into a world of impressive rock formations and turquoise waters. Nature was at its most majestic.

Who would have thought that we would enjoy this little side trip to Switzerland so much! The Furka Pass with its Belvedere Castle and especially the Rhone Glacier were incredibly fascinating! We would highly recommend it to anyone!

Day 12: Eibsee – a highlight in the Alps

Lake Eibsee shows its most beautiful side – crystal clear water surrounded by lush greenery and majestic mountain peaks. We take time to enjoy the silence and relax in nature. A jump into the cold water was of course not to be missed!

Day 13: Neuschwanstein Castle, Gayerlei Suspension Bridge – Fairytale impressions

The morning began with a visit to the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. The imposing architecture and location on a hill made it an unforgettable sight. Our journey then took us to the Geierlay Suspension Bridge, from where we had a breathtaking view of the surrounding nature. These two landmarks provided a fairytale backdrop – and plenty of room to be afraid of heights!

Wow. Finally, we made it to Neuschwanstein Castle. An incredibly beautiful castle that really impressed us! The Geierlay suspension bridge was also really worth seeing – but quite a challenge if you have a fear of heights! But Carlo loved it!

Day 14: Eltz Castle – one last highlight

The trip was drawing to a close, but not without one last highlight. The morning began with a visit to the picturesque Eltz Castle, whose towers were lit up in the morning light. A touch of the Middle Ages surrounded us as we strolled through the historic walls. We continued on to Cologne, where we visited the impressive cathedral and strolled through the bustling streets of the old town. With many memories in our minds, we finally made our way home, grateful for the unforgettable moments this trip through the Alps and Northern Italy had given us.

We return home from our trip through the Alps and Northern Italy with many stories to tell. Each day was a journey into a new world, from the majestic peaks of the Dolomites to the picturesque shores of Lago di Como and cities like Milan and Verona to the deep gorges of the Alps.
