One point on our bucketlist was a Whale Watching Tour, just as in Australia and New Zealand.
The animals simply have an incredible attraction for us, so it was out of the question for us to see the giants of the seas again.
The special thing: Right at the top of the Arctic, in Húsavík’s bay, there is the possibility to see blue whales! Unfortunately, we were not lucky enough to see the biggest animals in the world, but the sight of the other whales soon cheered us up. We booked our tour via North Sailing, which described their tours as environmentally friendly. We especially liked that, so we got a brochure and chose a tour. The main season for whale watching is between May and September, but puffins can only be seen between April and August. We decided for the original whale watching tour, as only this one was offered for the next day. Beside the original, there is also the sailing tour or the carbon-neutral “Silent Whale Watching Tour”.
As on most tours, there was also a thick overall included, which we would highly recommend to you. In the beginning it may not seem very cold, but this can change very quickly during the three hours. Most of the time, there are toilets on board and for warming up there was also a cocoa and a cinnamon roll for strengthening.
So, now we come to the most important thing: The whales!
These animals are simply the absolute banger. I could swarm for hours about my favourite animals and yet the feeling of having seen them and being only a few meters away from them would not be transmitted properly.
Since we chose the environmentally friendly option, our boat was a bit slower and we turned off the engine a few meters in front of the whale, so we didn’t get quite that close to it. But this didn’t bother us at all because we were the visitors in the home of the giants and didn’t want to disturb them. There were also many speedboats with tourists stopping only a few meters from the whales: In my opinion not professional and recommendable.
The whales always came towards us on their own, so we could take great photos. One of my favourite pictures of all is the picture we were able to take at the last appearance of a whale. He showed us not only his beautiful tail fin at the end, but also his head! At that time, he was very close to us; the moment was breathtaking.
