One of the most fascinating geological formations in the world and a must-see for nature lovers is the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. The unique hexagonal basalt columns rising from the sea attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
General information
The Giant’s Causeway on the north coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland, also known as the ‘Road of the Giants’, is a geological marvel. The area, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of approximately 40,000 uniformly shaped basalt columns that were formed by volcanic activity roughly 60 million years ago. It is one of Northern Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions.
The formation
The Giant’s Causeway was formed by the cooling of hot lava. When lava cools very slowly and evenly, vertical columns of basalt can form. The columnar structure is created by stress cracks that slowly penetrate the material as it cools and shrinks, spreading perpendicular to the cooling surface.
The legend
The legends surrounding the Giant’s Causeway are as fascinating as its geological features. One of the most famous is that of Fionn Mac Cumhaill (also known as Finn McCool), an Irish giant.
One day Fionn was so offended by his Scottish opponent Benandonner that he decided to build a dam to defeat Benandonner in a duel. Fionn worked day and night to build the dam, and when it was finished, he challenged Benandonner to a duel.
When Fionn saw Benandonner coming over the dam, he realised that Benandonner was bigger than he was. Frightened, Fionn ran home to his wife Oonagh. Oonagh had an idea: she disguised Fionn as a little baby. When Benandonner arrived, Oonagh said Fionn wasn’t there, but he could look after the baby. At the sight of the ‘baby’, Benandonner got scared – if this was the baby, how big was the father? Benandonner ran off and destroyed the dam on his way back to Scotland.
