The area, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of approximately 40,000 uniformly shaped basalt columns that were formed by volcanic activity roughly 60 million years ago. When lava cools very slowly and evenly, vertical columns of basalt can form. One of the most famous is that of Fionn Mac Cumhaill (also known as Finn McCool), an Irish giant. <\/p>\n<p>One day Fionn was so offended by his Scottish opponent Benandonner that he decided to build a dam to defeat Benandonner in a duel. Fionn worked day and night to build the dam, and when it was finished, he challenged Benandonner to a duel. <\/p>\n<p>When Fionn saw Benandonner coming over the dam, he realised that Benandonner was bigger than he was. Frightened, Fionn ran home to his wife Oonagh. Oonagh had an idea: she disguised Fionn as a little baby. When Benandonner arrived, Oonagh said Fionn wasn&#8217;t there, but he could look after the baby. At the sight of the &#8216;baby&#8217;, Benandonner got scared &#8211; if this was the baby, how big was the father?
