One of these is the Mosteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos, an impressive monastery in the Bel\u00e9m district of <a href=\"https:\/\/destary.com\/en\/travel-guides\/lisbon-a-journey-through-the-capital-of-portugal\/\">Lisbon<\/a>, that attracts visitors from all over the world. It became a monument of national importance and is one of the highlights of Portuguese architecture, along with the Batalha Monastery and the Church of Christ in Tomar. Until 1834, the monastery was home to the Hieronymites, the order of St Jerome, which gave the monastery its name.  <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2e9796 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"e2e9796\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-79cbc36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"79cbc36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Architecture and design<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a170dae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a170dae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Mosteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos is an incredible symbol of Portugal&#8217;s wealth and success during the Golden Age of Discovery. Designed by the architect Diogo de Boitaca, it is one of the finest examples of Portuguese late Gothic Manueline style with Renaissance influences. <\/p>\n<p>The imposing south portal, designed by Jo\u00e3o de Castilho, rises above the cornice of the monastery church. It is 32 metres high and 12 metres wide. <\/p>\n<p>The entire fa\u00e7ade of the monastery is made of white limestone. It was extracted from a nearby quarry and transported to Bel\u00e9m on horse-drawn carts.
